WELCOME TO PRACTICAL SHOOTING AT REDMOND ROD & GUN CLUB

If you’re looking to move beyond static target practice and safely introduce transitioning between multiple targets, adding in holster work, and finally dynamic movement, you’ve found the right spot!  This is a great way to test your gear, your movement, and your mind. Our Practical Shooting sessions are designed as the ultimate training ground for USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association) and International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) style competition.

In this discipline, we focus on the "Triad of Practical Shooting": Accuracy, Power, and Speed - Diligentia, Vis, Celeritas. We don't just stand still; we solve shooting problems on the fly.

Safety is paramount - we have Range Safety Officers (RSOs) present to help guide while maintaining safety as you progress through your entire shooting journey.

What to Expect

During the warm months, we offer a practice day, and a variety of family friendly matches that include some combination of the below:

  • Dynamic Stages: Unlike traditional lanes, our stages involve moving between positions.

  • Diverse Targets: You’ll engage a mix of "paper and steel," including USPSA cardboard silhouettes, reactive steel poppers, and moving targets.

  • Drawing from the Holster: Under the supervision of our Range Safety Officers, you’ll practice safe draws and reloads under the clock.

  • Competitive Drills: We frequently set up "classifier" style stages, allowing you to benchmark your progress against national USPSA standards.

  • Safety First: Our sessions are run under strict "Cold Range" protocols. Safety is our absolute priority, ensuring a welcoming environment for all skill levels.

Matches

Here is our suggestion for a progression of matches:

  1. Rimfire Challenge:  Start with stationary shooting with .22lr at 5 steel plates.

  2. Steel Challenge:  Next is to add in holster work and centerfire size/type pistols.

  3. Practical Shooting: The next step is to add in movement and stage complexity.

  4. 3-Gun:  The final stage adds in manipulating 3 different types of guns in a stage.

Gear Essentials

To get the most out of your practice, we recommend bringing:

  1. Eye and ear protection (electronic ears recommended for better instruction).

  2. A reliable semi-auto pistol / rifle / shotgun depending on match style.

  3. A sturdy belt with a secure holster and at least 3 magazine pouches (depending on match style)

  4. Sufficient ammunition for high-volume shot counts.

Director’s Note: Practical shooting is about more than just pulling a trigger; it’s about discipline and efficiency.   Come prepared to learn, help tape targets, and have a great time with a community of like-minded shooters!

Schedule (May - October)

First Saturday:  Practical Shooting Practice

Open for pistol, pistol caliber carbine (PCC), and shotgun practice. Rimfire pistol and rifle practice is welcome.  Check the website calendar for hours.

Additionally, Shooters may pass a certification test to be able to use the Practical Shooting Bays on their own to practice during all open hours.

Second Saturday:  Practical Shooting Competition

This match is the RRGC version of Practical Shooting which is the natural progression from Steel Challenge.  In addition to holster work and time pressure, it adds in lots of movement, barriers, reloads, and brain engagement targets. Anyone who is practical shooting certified may participate.

  • Equipment: Centerfire or .22lr pistol, holster, 2+ spare magazines, 200 rounds of ammunition.

  • What to Expect: This is the RRGC version of Practical Shooting, which is the natural progression from Steel Challenge. It is a dynamic match that adds movement, barriers, reloads, and targets that require brain engagement across 4-5 stages.  A typical stage is 20 - 36 rds.

Third Saturday:  Rimfire Challenge

This is the perfect entry into competitive shooting. The shooter is stationary, uses only .22lr rifle and pistol (low recoil and less loud), and shoots under time pressure at 5 steel targets.  There are 4 stages:  2 pistol stages and 2 rifle stages. Each stage is 5 strings of fire using 5 steel targets. Great fun! Youth welcome.

  • Equipment: Rimfire Pistol and Rifle, 200 rounds of 22 LR ammunition, 5 magazines recommended.  Need minimum 25 rds magazine capacity to get through a stage.

Fourth Saturday:  Steel Challenge

This is the natural progression from rimfire.  The format is similar but adds in the dimension of holster work.  It is a match where a shooter stands still, and on the beep of a timer, draws from a holster and shoots 5 white steel targets as fast as they can.  The focus is on draw speed, accuracy, and transitions.   As is true for all RRGC matches, this is a family friendly match, where everyone is helpful, beginners can learn, and more experienced shooters can improve.   Anyone who is Practical Shooting certified may participate.

Skill level expectations for competitive shooting events

Our highly experienced Range Officers can help you up your game so that you can safely participate in matches requiring more skillful gun handling. RRGC also has a team of qualified instructors who can help you improve shooting fundamentals.

  1. Rimfire Challenge: Best match for beginning competitors and youth

  2. Steel Challenge: Next step up for pistol shooters, adds holster work.

  3. Practical Shooting: Very good pistol skills and gun safety awareness recommended.  Adds movement and more challenging targets.

  4. 3-Gun: Very good skills and high safety awareness with pistol, shotgun and pistol caliber carbine

Range Safety Officers (RSOs) and Range Officers (RO), who direct competitive shooting events for the RRGC Action Pistol Practice Range) are all volunteers.  With that in mind, shooters are encouraged to consider joining both RRGC and its RSO program.  Expanding the club's membership improves the club.  Expanding its RSO team makes it possible to expand the hours of operation of the rifle and pistol venues, thereby benefitting the entire Central Oregon shooting community.
